The Lost Heiress

Author:  Roseanna M. White
Publisher:  Bethany House Publishers
ISBN #:  9780764213502
Pages:  416

Meet Brook, a young woman who has felt out of place within the society she grew up in.  Brook was raised in Monaco by a family that is not her own.  Justin, Brook’s best friend and confidante, goes in search of Brook’s biological parents and finds that Brook is an English heiress.  From the moment that Brook steps into Whitby Park and meets her father and extended family, Brook’s life is never the same.  Mysteries surround Brook from how her biological mother died to an even bigger mystery that threatens Brook’s life.

Roseanna M. White does a terrific job engaging the reader into Brook’s life and world.  This book is an absolute page turner, equipped with mystery, romance, and realistic characters.  This is the first book in Ms. White’s Ladies of the Manor Series.  I just finished it and I cannot wait for the second installment of this series to come out next year!  I wholeheartedly recommend this great read!

I’m Happy For You

I’m Happy For You (Sort of…..Not Really):  Finding Contentment in a Culture of Comparison

Author:  Kay Wills Wyma
Publisher:  WaterBrook Press
ISBN #:  9781601425959
Pages:  231

Have you ever found yourself struggling to stay content when everyone around you seems so perfect?  Kay Wills Wyma writes in her new book, I’m Happy For You, a topic that have affected all of us at one time or another:  comparison.  In a world, where we can compare and be compared by just one click of the mouse, unhappiness is never too far away.  Ms. Wyma writes from her own experiences of learning how to deal with the comparison-crazed society and shares with us her experiences and also shares the insights she has gained from her children as she has navigated them through their own experiences with comparison.

One of the golden nuggets of insight that Ms. Wyma shares is how God made us not for isolation but to be in community with one another.  I thought this was such an important statement to make because comparison has a tendency to create isolation from others.  Ms. Wyma also makes the point that God made us unique for a purpose; to help/make a difference in one another’s lives.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  Ms. Wyma writes honestly and is encouraging.  I would recommend this book to anyone who struggles with finding contentment or who needs encouragement on their road to contentment.

For Freedom, Passion, and Joy

Author:  Susie Larson

ISBN #:  0764213318
Pages:  224

Have you ever found yourself with too much on your plate?  Do you tend to say “yes” to any/every task presented to you?  If so, I think Susie Larson’s book can give you a new perspective on your yeses.

Susie Larson speaks about giving away our time.  Mrs. Larson writes with a profound gentleness that speaks to your heart.  She shares of her own personal knowledge in these areas as well.  She writes of the dangers of overextending ourselves and how to get ourselves free without guilt.  Mrs. Larson addresses so many topics such as peer pressure, and self-worth.  Susie Larson points out that God is invested in our lives and we should be attuned to God’s leading.  This truly made an impact on me because I have been guilty of being so busy and burnt-out that I have lost track of time, especially time spent with God.

Faith of Our Fathers DVD Review

Faith of Our Fathers DVD Review

FlyBy Promotions has given me the opportunity to review a movie this month.  The movie is called Faith of Our Fathers and is on DVD right now.

This movie is the story of two men, John Paul George and Wayne Adams.  The movie starts with John Paul George looking through his garage and finds a box of his father’s things from the Vietnam War.  Within this box is a letter that leads John Paul to embark on a journey to find out who his father was.  This journey leads him to Wayne Adams, whose father Eddie Adams served alongside John Paul’s father.  John Paul and Eddie set out to Washington, D.C. to see the names of their fathers on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.  However, this trip to Washington, D.C. has more in store than the pair realizes.

I truly enjoyed the message of this movie and would recommend it.  I found that the beginning of the movie is a bit rushed but the movie does reach a stride that truly engages you in the lives of these characters.  The message is a strong and poignant one.  This movie is good for the entire family.

Jaded

Jaded
Author:  Varina Denman
Publisher:  David C. Cook
ISBN #:  9781434708373
Pages:  336

This is the story of Ruthie Turner, a young woman greatly affected by circumstances in her life.  When Ruthie was a young girl she was shunned along with her mother from their church.  Since this occurrence, Ruthie struggles with the townspeople, has lost her faith in God, and dreams of leaving the town for college.  In the midst of Ruthie’s world, enters in Dodd Cunningham and his family as the town newcomers.  Dodd is a refreshing addition to the town and has a tremendous impact on Ruthie and her family.

This is Varina Denman’s debut novel and I can honestly say that I cannot wait for her next one.  Ms. Denman writes the characters so well; Ruthie’s character is told with such fluidity that I felt that I was experiencing Ruthie’s life alongside of her.

If you are looking for a great fiction read, I recommend picking up this book.  There is a great message within these pages I would not want you to miss.

Sand In My Sandwich

Author:  Sarah Parshall Perry
Publisher:  Revell
ISBN:  0800724100
Pages:  224

Sand In My Sandwich is the real story of Sarah Parshall Perry and her experiences in motherhood.  However, before you think this is your run-of-the-mill telling of parental experiences, this book is definitely not.

Sarah Parshall Perry brings you her story of motherhood and how through her experiences she has discovered reliance on God and the realization that He is there throughout all the hard stuff.  Mrs. Perry shares the story of her three children, two of whom have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum.  She shares the ups, downs, challenges, and light-hearted moments in between.  From the first page, Mrs. Perry takes you on her journey with humor and a very poignant honesty.  Mrs. Perry also shares many nuggets of wisdom and truth.  What was also such an important part of her story is her faith.  I found Mrs. Perry’s faith to be a wonderful example for anyone going through life’s tough moments.

I recommend this book to everyone regardless of whether you are a parent or not.  I believe Mrs. Perry has a great message to share with everyone.  This book definitely impacted my faith walk.

Nichole Nordeman - The UnMaking

Nichole Nordeman:  The UnMaking

FlyBy Promotions gave me another great opportunity to review a music album.  This month’s selection is Nichole Nordeman’s:  The UnMaking.

Nichole Nordeman is a Christian music artist responsible for such hits as:  Brave, Holy, and I’m With You.  It has been ten years since her last studio album, and I can honestly say I am so happy the wait is over!  J

Nichole Nordeman’s newest album, The UnMaking, has six brand new songs.  Even though there are only six songs on this album you won’t be disappointed.  I have been playing the album non-stop since I received it and each song on this album has left a great impact on me.  Each song is powerful and filled with faith, love, and praise for the Lord.  I feel that these songs are really heartfelt and beautiful; your families would enjoy listening to them.  Nichole’s voice is beautiful and captures the emotion involved in each song.

If you are looking for new music, I definitely recommend getting Nichole Nordeman’s new album.  These songs will bless your heart and enrich your worship times.

TobyMac: This Is Not A Test album

TobyMac: This Is Not A Test album

FlyBy Promotions gave me another wonderful opportunity to review a music album.  This month’s selection is TobyMac’s:  This Is Not A Test. TobyMac is a Christian hip hop recording artist. He has produced many hits throughout the years, the most notable for me have been City on Our Knees and Hold On.

TobyMac’s newest album This Is Not A Test does not disappoint. The lyrics illustrate faith in God and the journey we take with the Lord. These are worship songs that reflect the love TobyMac has for the Lord. The songs praise the Lord and depict the uplifting feeling of walking with the Lord. I greatly enjoyed this album, however, my favorite song is Beyond Me. This song really spoke to me because it spoke of what happens when we turn to the Lord and how our lives change.

I would recommend This Is Not A Test to anyone who enjoys uplifting Christian music.

Pizza Ranch Living Hope CD

There’s going to be little change on today’s blog post, my dear readers.  I had the awesome opportunity by Flyby Promotions to review a Christian music compilation CD.

This Christian music compilation comes from Pizza Ranch.  If you haven’t heard of Pizza Ranch, let me introduce you to them.  “Adrie Groeneweg had a dream that started in Hull, IA, in 1981, when he was just 19 years old.  It was simple.  Why does everyone have to drive out of town to get a pizza?  With just six specialty and single topping pizza recipes developed by Adrie’s mother, Lorraine, Pizza Ranch was born.  Pizza Ranch’s vision and mission is to glorify God by positively impacting the world and to give every guest a legendary experience.  They have 190+ locations across 13 states including Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nebraska, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.”

I have been listening to Pizza Ranch’s Living Hope CD for two straight weeks and I am absolutely uplifted by every single song on this album.  The songs are all centered around the theme of Hope.  Featured artists on this album are:  Colton Dixon, Francesca Batistelli, Ellie Holcomb, Sidewalk Prophets, Keven Max, Bart Millard, Passion Band featuring Kristian Stanfill, Michael W. Smith, and Mark Schultz.  Each song has infused by days and evenings with hope, joy, and God’s love.  Since I got this CD I have found myself waking up and going to bed singing one of the songs on the album.
I would highly recommend that you go on Pizza Ranch’s website:  pizzaranch.com/livinghope  and download this wonderful album.  The album will only be available from now until August 31.

Yes or No: How Your Everday Decisions Will Forever Shape Your LIfe

Yes or No:  How Your Everyday Decisions Will Forever Shape Your Life

Author:  Jeff Shinabarger
Publisher:  David C. Cook
ISBN #:  0781408210
Pages:  224

If you have ever wonder, “How am I ever going to make this decision?” than you might find Yes or No a help.  The author, Jeff Shinabarger, writes about how our everyday decisions effect our lives and how we can better make these decision.  Mr. Shinabarger will take you through the choices you have, how to factor in your wisdom, decision-making styles, and the decision-making process.  He also writes about how to make decisions not just for ourselves but also those situations where our loves one should also be considered.

I found this book interesting.  I thought it was refreshing to read a new perspective on decision-making that not only considers the individual making the decision but also that draws attention to family involvement.  I also felt that the author sharing his own story was a great example and truly felt like a conversation from an individual who knows how difficult the process can be.  I found Mr. Shinabarger’s advice to read the book of Proverbs every day for wisdom is very helpful.

Overall, I do recommend this book to anyone looking for a new perspective on the decision-making process.  Making decisions can be difficulty at times; a different perspective may support your journey to making them in the future.

Speaking of Jesus

Speaking of Jesus:  The Art of Non-Evangelism

Author:  Carl Medearis
Publisher:  David C. Cook
ISBN #:  9781434702104
Pages:  192

Speaking of Jesus is about Car Medearis’s experiences in sharing Jesus with others.  In this book, Mr. Medearis highlights the life of Jesus.  Mr. Medearis states that he does not label himself as a Christian but instead as a Jesus follower.  He encourages that we should become familiar with the life of Jesus and the lessons in the Bible Jesus lived for us.  Mr. Medearis goes on to explore doctrine, theology, and his opinion of being a Christian.

In his experiences, Mr. Medearis would ask many thought-provoking questions to others, for example, “If Jesus were present, who would he want to spend time with?”  Mr. Medearis also touches upon getting rid of the words church or Christian in our vocabulary due to how it has turned other individuals away from a relationship with Jesus.

In sum, I found this book interesting.  The focus on the life of Jesus, the encouragement to read the gospels and getting to know Jesus is an important message.  I would recommend this book if you are interested in getting a different perspective of how to outreach to others.

Until The Harvest

Until the Harvest

Author:  Sarah Loudin Thomas
Publisher:  Bethany House Publishers
ISBN #:  9780764212260
Pages:  300

This novel follows the life of Henry Phillips.  On New Year’s Eve, Henry’s life is forever changed by the sudden death of his father.  After this sudden loss, Henry experiences many challenges that test his faith and puts him on the journey of finding himself.  Along Henry’s journey we are introduced to many other characters who affect his journey.  The reader will meet Margaret, a young woman who works for Henry’s grandmother, who challenges Henry.  Mayfair, Margaret’s little sister, with a special gift gives Henry new perspective on his journey.  Henry’s grandmother and mother are two wise and strong women who guide Henry.

This is the first book I have read by Sarah Loudin Thomas and it definitely won’t be my last.  The characters in this story are very memorable and endearing.  I could feel the love that Sarah Loudin Thomas has for these characters.  I found Henry’s grandmother and mother to be admirable women and great examples of strength, courage, love, and guidance throughout this story.  This book is the second book in the Appalachian Blessings series.  I haven’t read the first book, Miracle in a Dry Season, however, I found that this second book can be read on its own.  (I’m definitely putting the Miracle in a Dry Season on my book list to read).

I recommend this book to everyone.  This is a story of the love a family can make and how God’s love surrounds all of us in the midst of our struggles.

Comment below if you have read any one of the books from the Appalachian Blessings series; I would love to read what your thoughts are on this author and the books.

Facing the Blitz:  Three Strategies for Turning Trials into Triumphs

Author:  Jeff Kemp
Publisher:  Bethany House Publishers
ISBN #:  0764214020
Pages:  240

Jeff Kemp, former quarterback of several NFL teams’ writes of the trials we face in life and how to handle them.  The first thing I found interesting in the book is that Mr. Kemp likened the trials we face to blitzes that occur on the football field.  Mr. Kemp writes of the many lessons he has learned in life and shares the anecdotes others have taught him.  There are three lessons he imparts to the reader for turning life’s trials into triumphs:  take a long-term view, be willing to change, and reach out to others.

I found Jeff Kemp’s lessons interesting.  I especially found the lesson of being an investor in other people’s lives rather than being a consumer.  I felt that this was a reminder to serve as Jesus served and also reminded me of the passage in Philippians 2:3 “Consider others as more important than yourselves.”

Overall, I think this book is thought-provoking on the ways we can positively face our trials.  I would recommend this book to a football fan or anyone that wants to learn from another individual’s story on how you can make it through the trials in life.

Renewing Your Mind

Renewing Your Mind

Author:  Neil T. Anderson

Renewing Your Mind is the fourth book in the Victory series by Neil T. As I worked through this book, I thought that the author made some great points on each topic.  The Scriptures were very helpful and the questions solidified each chapter.  This book is a great beginner in the journey of renewing your mind and I recommend it highly.

Playing By Heart

Playing By Heart

Author:  Anne Mateer
Publisher:  Bethany House Publishers
ISBN #:  0764210653

Playing By Heart by Anne Mateer is a thoroughly enjoyable novel.  Ms. Mateer writes these characters and their world so beautifully and vividly that you cannot help but become engrossed in their world.  The story starts with Lula Bowman, a serious graduate student out to make her way in life.  Her plans however become interrupted by a family tragedy and she must move back to her hometown to help her family.  Back in her hometown, she is offered a job teaching music, which she isn’t happy about at first.  Lula goes through many challenges and her faith in God, determination, and tenacity in meeting these challenges I find endears that character more to the reader.

Publisher:   David C. Cook Publishing
ISBN #:  9780781412155

This book is an open and honest look into getting through the difficult times in life.  This is Kara Tippetts story of her diagnosis of cancer and the days and months since.  She writes with heartbreaking honesty about her most difficult hard and the struggles she faces each day.  Throughout reading I found Kara Tippetts bravery and strength an inspiration.  However, most notable and inspiring to me is the faith and trust she possesses in the Lord and the belief she emanates to the world that God is good through all moments in life.  The message of faith and dependency on the Lord through all things and moments is a message she sends to all of her readers.  Through sharing her thoughts and struggles with her readers, Mrs. Tippetts has shown that despite the many hard moments we face in life, God is always faithful.

Answering Your Kids’ Toughest Questions:  Helping Them Understand Loss, Sin, Tragedies, and Other Hard Topics

Authors:  Elyse Fitzpatrick & Jessica Thompson
Publisher:  Bethany House Publishers
ISBN #:  0764211870
Pages:  176

Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson wrote this book with the goal of helping every parent answer some of the tough questions children could ask.  The range of questions the authors’ explore are death, sin, divorce, and the explanation of difficult Bible stories.  What I found helpful is that the explanations were divided by age groups.  The authors wrote helpful scripts designed to aid parents explain these topics to children.

In my opinion, I think this book can be really helpful for parents.  I found the scripts used appropriate language for each stage of child development and serves as a great example on how to conduct these types of conversations with children.  I also find that this book is also very practical and relevant for types of questions children ask today.

Feel free to comment if you would like to share any thoughts on this book.

The Beloved Daughter

The Beloved Daughter

Author:  Alana Terry
Publisher:  Potter Works Publishing
ISBN #:  1941735002
Pages:  234

The Beloved Daughter by Alana Terry is beautifully told from the very first word.  This story truly took me in and took me on a heartbreaking story of faith and perseverance.  The story revolves around Chung-Cha in North Korea, during a time of Christian persecution.  From the beginning, the reader is consumed by the situations that occur to a very young Chung-Cha and transgresses into her adulthood.

I will say that Alana Terry does a wonderful job in writing a story so involving with vivid characters that it does not let you go long after the last page has been read.  Keep a box of Kleenex close by because tears will definitely fall as you read this story.  It is a story that illustrates how the love and strength of God sustains us in everything we go through in life.
I highly recommend this book; you will not be disappointed.  Alana Terry has a true gift in telling stories that will leave a lasting impression.

I would love to hear from you if you have read this book or if there are any other Alana Terry’s books you can recommend.
