To Joey, With Love Review

To Joey, With Love

I had the great opportunity by Icon Media Group to review the true life story of Joey and Rory Feek, in a biopic called To Joey, with Love.  Joey and Rory Feek were a country and Christian music duo since 2008.  For many years Joey and Rory Feek blessed us all with their music.  This is their story, of their love, their faith, and their life.

In 2014, Joey and Rory had put the music scene on hold temporarily to launch a new adventure, the birth of their baby girl, Indiana.  Shortly thereafter, Joey was diagnosed with cancer.  This touching biopic was put together by Rory Feek as well as narrated by him.  It documents their life from before the birth of baby Indiana throughout Joey’s fight with cancer.

I watched this biopic as a person who didn’t know very much of the Feeks.  I can honestly say that this movie is powerful and moving.  Joey and Rory’s faith impacted me greatly and their example of tremendous and strong faith will stay with me forever.  The Feek family will forever be in my prayers.

I would recommend seeing this moving dedication to a great and talented woman and family.

Amy Grant’s Tennessee Christmas album is quite the treasure to listen to during this Christmas season.  This album is a mix of old country favorites such as Tennessee Christmas and popular favorites such as White Christmas, Joy to the World, and my favorite O Come, All Ye Faithful.  The song To Be Together is a wonderful addition to the album.

If you are looking for something new to listen to this Christmas, I would recommend this album.  Amy Grant’s voice brings all the comfort, hope, and love into this season.

The Blessings of Unity Book Review

 The Blessings of Unity:
               God’s Best for Our Marriages

Author:  Richard T. Case
Publisher:  Elevate Faith
Pages:  130
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Marriage

The Blessings of Unity:  God’s Best for Our Marriages discusses the topic of unity in our marriages.  Richard T. Case calls attention to an important topic that impacts marriages:  disunity.  Mr. Case writes about ways in which many situations of disunity is addressed in the Bible and how we can use God’s Word to teach how to bring unity back into our marriages.  Mr. Case also uses his marriage as an example of disunity in a marriage.  He speaks honestly of his own behaviors along as his wife’s and how they both came to discover how disunited in their marriage they were and how they addressed and brought the unity back into their marriage.

Start Here: Beginning a Relationship with Jesus

Start Here:  Beginning a Relationship with Jesus

Authors:  David Dwight & Nicole Unice
Publisher:  David C. Cook
Pages:  208
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Spiritual Growth

Start Here:  Beginning a Relationship with Jesus is a book designed for new believers and for individuals seeking to start a relationship with Jesus.  The authors take you from starting a relationship with Jesus to growing in your relationship with Him.  Along the way the authors highlighted special topics such as obstacles, who God is, and receiving Jesus.

In all honesty, I feel this book can be for new believers and seasoned believers.  I got so much from these authors, one of which is to start with reading the gospel of John first when you’re starting to learn about Jesus.  The authors write with clarity and ease; as if they are having a conversation with the reader.  The authors write of their own experiences, which gives the book a personalization not found in others that speak of this same topic.

I recommend this book to everyone who are new or are continuing their relationship with Jesus.  This book will be a blessing to anyone who picks it up.

Parenting by Paul Tripp Book Review

Parenting:  14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family

Author:  Paul David Tripp
Publisher:  Crossway
Pages:  224
Audience:  Parents
Genre:  Parenting

Parenting:  14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family is a book written by Paul Tripp encouraging parents to embrace their calling as parents and what that calling truly means.  The 14 principles Mr. Tripp writes about are calling, law, grace, inability, identity, process, lost, character, false gods, authority, control, foolishness, rest, and mercy.  Mr. Tripp speaks of parents as being ambassador of their children.  He writes that parents are not owners of their children; however, they are stewards of their children’s lives.  Mr. Tripp states that God created Godly parents to be His tools in order to create and guide children to be conscious of God and create a relationship with Him.

One statement that I thought was so important and is so true that Mr. Tripp mentions is that God is with every parent.  I found this to be very poignant because at times parenting can feel lonely and knowing that God is with you can be reassuring.  God has equipped parents with His love and His Word on their parenting journeys.

I would recommend this book to all parents and parents-to-be.  This book will encourage and support your parenting journey.  This book is a wonderful reminder of how faithful God is and how much He loves us and our children.

Someone Like You Review

Someone Like You

Author:  Victoria Bylin
Publisher:  Bethany House
Pages:  336
Audience:  Women
Genre:  Fiction/Contemporary Romance

Someone Like You is a beautiful story told of two people, Julia Dare and Zeke Monroe who meet again after their relationship came to an end in college.  Julia Dare is a new Christian with a four year old son, Max.  Julia is dealing with many conflicts in her life and leans on her newfound faith to guide her through the challenges she faces.

Zeke Morgan, is the manager of Caliente Springs in California.  Zeke is also going through his fair share of struggles.  Zeke, who has been a Christian for most of his life, is severely struggling with his faith and finding his way back.  Zeke is also struggling to keep Caliente Springs from getting sold due to lack of business.  One fine day, Julia has an assignment that involves her going to Caliente Springs and Zeke and Julia meet again.  Together these two discover many things about themselves, their faith, and each other.

I can honestly say that this has been one of my favorite books of this year.  Victoria Bylin really knows how to create characters with depth and substance.  As the reader, you will feel like you are truly taking the journey with Zeke and Julia; these characters are very relatable.

I would recommend picking up this book; you won’t regret it.

Live Smart by Dan Dumas is a must read for youth!  Mr. Dumas delivers a comprehensive read full of wisdom on topics young Christians face as they journey through this world.  Some of these topics speak about knowing the Bible, praying and serving others, working hard, amongst other topics that I believe every young Christian should know about.

Mr. Dumas writes with much wisdom, inspiration, and gets to the point.  I found it to be a quick read and it was filled with a lot of passion for guiding young Christians in their path in life.  I think parents will appreciate the care in which Mr. Dumas has written this book.

Undaunted Hope

Undaunted Hope

Author:  Jody Hedlund
Publisher:  Bethany House
Pages:  374
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Historical Fiction

Undaunted Hope is Book 3 in Jody Hedlund’s Beacons of Hope series.  Undaunted Hope is the story of Tessa Taylor, who ventures from her hometown to Eagle Harbor, Michigan to take a position as a schoolteacher.  Tessa Taylor’s fresh start is beset by many challenges.  The chief clerk of Cole Mine, is calculating, cruel, and tries every chance he can to compromise Tessa.  However, for every dark cloud (or character) there are those that are endearing and Jody Hedlund depicts a few.  One such character is Alex Bjorklund.  Upon their first meeting, it is clear Alex and Tessa have an unrivaled chemistry (you will definitely find yourself rooting for these two throughout the story).  Other endearing characters are Ingrid and Gunnar Bjorklund, Alex’s niece and nephew.

Overall, this is a memorable novel.  While this book is part of a series, I feel that it works as a standalone book.  I really enjoyed the author’s style of writing; I was thoroughly involved in the town of Eagle Harbor.  I would recommend that you check this book and author out.

At Love's Bidding

At Love’s Bidding

Author:  Regina Jennings
Publisher:  Bethany House
Pages:  352
Audience:  Adult
Genre:  Historical Fiction

Regina Jennings’s book, At Love’s Bidding, tells the story of Miranda Wimplegate, a young woman who helps her family manage an auction house in Boston, Massachusetts.  In a faux pas, the auction house accidently sells a portrait that they were not to sell.

These circumstances set Miranda’s grandfather to purchase an auction house in Missouri where the portrait was overheard to be shipped.  Miranda sets out with her grandfather to Missouri where surprises and the mystery of the portrait await.  While in Missouri, Miranda meets many quirky and endearing characters, one of whom is Wyatt Ballentine.  Their journey together is fraught with angst, however, these characters impact each other in very positive and faithful ways.

I would recommend this book.  The storyline is entertaining but also explores how faith impacts us on our walk through life’s struggles.  I enjoyed reading this story.  Regina Jennings is a gifted storyteller, who writes very memorable characters.

The Life We Never Expected Book Review

The Life We Never Expected
Authors:  Andrew and Rachel Wilson
Publisher:  Crossway
Pages:  160
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Parenting

Andrew and Rachel Wilson are parents of two autistic children, Anna and Zeke.  In this inspiring book, Andrew and Rachel speak about the life they have with their children and the lessons having two autistic children have taught them and the struggles they have had to weather through.  Andrew and Rachel write honestly about their feelings throughout their journey with their children.  The encouraging and hopeful message that Andrew and Rachel deliver in this book is not only a message for parents of special needs children but also is a widespread message for individuals.  There were two lessons that truly resonated with me:  the first is to ‘fight for our joy’ and the second is a reminder that ‘God redeems all things.’  Thank you to Andrew and Rachel for a truly inspirational and encouraging read.

I would recommend this book to parents and individuals.  This book will communicate hope and encouragement for the journey ahead.

Lauraine Snelling writes a story of a young widow, Anji Baard Moen, who has just come back to the town of Blessing, North Dakota with her children.  Anji comes back to Blessing after the death of her husband in Norway.  Surround by family and friends, Anji teaches at the school, writes for the town newspaper and watches her children grow with each passing day.  Thomas Devlin is a minister who also teaches at the school and who is a great friend to Anji and her family.

Along with Anji and Thomas is a cast full of characters that are very engaging and lovable.  One of my favorites is Ingeborg, doting mother and grandmother not only to her children but to the entire town; guiding everyone with her faith, wisdom, and love.  Challenges visit Blessing that complicate relationships and challenges these characters faith, however, through these challenges faith, love, and the power of a faithful community is illustrated.

Bearing Witness: Stories of Martyrdom and Costly Discipleship

Bearing Witness:  Stories of Martyrdom and Costly Discipleship

Edited by:  Charles E. Moore & Timothy Keiderling
Publisher:  Plough Publishing House
Pages:  226
Audience:  Adults

Bearing Witness is a collection of true stories of men and women who gave witness to Jesus Christ and His teachings.  Each account tells of an individual that spread the Word of Jesus’s teachings in the face of persecution and death.  This book is powerful and will break your heart.  The descriptions of these brave individuals and what transpires in their lives can be quite graphic.  However, their stories are inspirational in that they show us how to live faithful lives; lives dedicated to Christ.

While I read this book, I found myself truly inspired to know that there were Christians who made it their mission to live like Christ and be guided by that love and faith to reach out to others.  Their lives embody what it means to be a true follower of Christ and to love others more than oneself.

None Like Him

None Like Him
10 Ways God Is Different From Us (and why that’s a good thing)

Author:  Jen Wilkin
Publisher:  Crossway
Pages:  176
Audience:  Adult Women
Genre:  Christian Living

Jen Wilkin’s book, None Like Him, seeks to help Christian women to understand who God truly is, not the version of Him that our limited understanding can create Him to be.  The reality is that God is nothing like you or me.  God is our ultimate provider, unchanging, knowable, powerful, loving , and much, much more.  Ms. Wilkins wants us to know God and create true and deep relationship with Him.

I enjoyed reading None Like Him.  Ms. Wilkins writes in such a way that truly focused on the attributes of God and how our relationship with Him grows within these attributes.  I found the verses for meditation and reflection questions to be great in exploring the personal relationship you have with God.

I would highly recommend this book to every Christian woman who seeks to have a deeper understanding and relationship with God.

Wildflower Movie DVD Review

Wildflower DVD Movie

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date:  April 5, 2016

I had the great opportunity by Icon Media Group to review the upcoming DVD movie,Wildflower

Wildflower is the story of Chloe, a young and gifted art student in college who struggles with her difficult childhood and terrible nightmares.  Chloe is very disturbed by her nightmares; however, she is convinced that these dreams must be premonitions or past memories.  These dreams set Chloe on a mysterious adventure to find out what they mean.  Along the way, Chloe meets Josh, a young man who is also haunted by his own painful past and struggling with his faith.  Josh joins Chloe in unraveling the mystery of the meaning of Chloe’s visions and how they relate to a cold case.  Chloe and Josh find a confidante in one another and both find that they can start letting go of the burdens they have held onto for so long.

I enjoyed this movie very much.  I felt that it was written very well and the actors gave a wonderful performance of the characters and story-line.  This movie will leave you on the edge of your seat as it really keeps you guessing minute by minute.  Josh’s struggle with his faith and Chloe’s narrative of what she was going throughout the story were very poignant.

I definitely recommend this movie.  This movie is PG-13 so it is unsuitable for younger children.  I will note that Chloe’s difficult childhood is explained appropriately in the movie.  The movie website also has a wonderful Discussion Guide available for groups:  www.wildflowerthemovie.com.  The movie comes out on DVD on April 5th, 2016.

The Love + Blessed Subscription Box is a monthly subscription box that delivers encouraging and faithful messages each month.  The  monthly subscription box cost is $10.00 a month.  There are also prepay options on their website http://www.lovedandblessed.com/.

Stay tuned for my review of the March 2016 subscription box:

This is what the outside of the box looks like.

This is what the subscription box looked like upon opening it.

This was the theme for this month's box:  Brokenness.

This is a mini-purse.  I found it to be very cute.

The gift of encouragement is a sewing kit: to remind us that God stitches us together with His Love!

I loved the Loved + Blessed logo on the pen!

The keepsake Scripture card depicts an encouraging message from 2 Corinthians 4:16-17.  The reminder sticker is a wonderful reminder that we can break through anything with the Lord by our side (I loved the symbolism of the butterfly).

An encouragement card to give to a friend/family member.  This is a great way to share an encouraging word with someone that may be in need of one.

I thoroughly enjoyed receiving this subscription box!  I found it to be such a blessing with its words of encouragement.  I also loved the fact that the cards could be used as gifts of encouragement to others.  This would be a wonderful gift to any friend/family member in need of encouragement or just to brighten someone's day.

The Heart of a Leader Review

The Heart of a Leader:  Insights on the Art of Influence

Author:  Ken Blanchard
Publisher:  David C. Cook
Pages:  192
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Business, Christian Life, Professional Growth

This book is comprised of some of the most influential leadership quotes  that Dr. Blanchard has come across or developed.  The format of the book is very reader-friendly.  Dr. Blanchard features the sayings and writes a commentary of the quote.  These commentaries are short and are filled with Christian advice.

In my opinion, I consider all of us as leaders.  Whether you are a parent, and/or work in business or ministry we all have the ability to influence others.  I would recommend this book to everyone for this very reason.  Two of my most favorite quotes I came away with from reading Dr. Blanchard’s book are:  ‘What we give our attention to, grows.’ and ‘Take what you do seriously but yourself lightly.’

Leave a comment below of any of your favorite leadership/encouraging quotes; I would love to read them.

Book Giveaway Time!

Book Giveaway!

Hi My Book-Loving Friends!

I wanted to start hosting some book giveaways for you guys so I thought since Spring is almost here why not start a new beginning?

The first book I wanted to giveaway is my copy of Miracles From Heaven by Christy Wilson Beam.

Annabel Beam spent most of her childhood in and out of hospitals with a rare and incurable digestive disorder that prevented her from living a normal, healthy life. One sunny day when she was able to go outside and play with her sisters, she fell three stories headfirst into an old, hollowed-out tree. Implausibly, she survived without a scratch. While unconscious inside the tree, with rescue workers struggling to get to her, she visited heaven. After being released from the hospital, she defied science and had inexplicably recovered from her chronic ailment.

A remarkable family drama and uplifting, hope-filled memoir, MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN will change how we look at the world around us.

Miracles From Heaven

Miracles From Heaven:  A Little Girl, Her Journey to Heaven, and Her Amazing Story of Healing

Author:  Christy Wilson Beam
Publisher:  Hachette Books
Pages:  224
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Christian Non-fiction/Autobiography

This is the true life story of a young girl, Annabel Beam, who spent much of her young life suffering with an incurable digestive disease.  From the very beginning of this book you will see that this remarkable young girl has such tremendous faith that goes beyond her young years.  Through all of her struggles Annabel remains steadfast in her faith in God even when pain and disappointment were present in her life.

One day, everything changes for Annabel as while laying with her sisters on an old cottonwood tree, she falls deep within its trunk with no way out.  The written depiction of the hours that went by while the Beam family faced this horrible situation is harrowing.  What occurs after Annabel’s rescue is a miraculous experience.  Mrs. Beam writes authentically that as the reader, I truly felt that I took this journey with the family.
This story touched me very much and reminded me of what Jesus said in Mark 10:15, ‘Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.’

I recommend this book to everyone who needs encouragement in their faith and hope.  This faithful family will truly touch your heart.

Happy Reading!

Passion: Salvation's Tide Is Rising

Passion:  Salvation's Tide Is Rising Album

FlyBy Promotion has given me the great opportunity to review a music album this month.  The music album this month is Passion:  Salvation's Tide is Rising.

From the moment the first song started to play I was transfixed.  Each song that came after just got better and better.  I honestly do not have a favorite song because each one is so beautiful.  The featured artists on this album:  David Crowder, Matt Redman, Christy Nockels, and many others are wonderful; their voices’ resonating long after the song is over.  I have made this album a part of my worship time and music library because each song is filled with passion, love, truth, and light.  The songs are also safe for everyone in your family to listen to.

I wholeheartedly recommend that you add this album to your worship library.  This album definitely put passion into my worship time with the Lord and throughout my days.

The wonderful people at FlyBy Promotions have reserved a copy of this album for one reader of my blog to receive.  Click on the Rafflecopter giveaway link below to enter for a chance to win this album:

A Woman's Guide to Knowing What You Believe

A Woman’s Guide to Knowing What You Believe

Author:  Patty Houser
Publisher:  Bethany House Publishers
ISBN #:  0764217089
Pages:  224
Audience:  Adults (Women)

Ever gotten into a difficult conversation with someone about your faith?  The author, Patty Houser, writes this book outreaching to women of faith about how to have dynamic faith and how to have dynamic faith and how to communicate this faith to others.  Ms. Houser also poses the question that most women know what they believe; however, can women remain grounded in their faith when they are challenged by another?

The author first calls women to examine their beliefs.  I understood what the author was displaying with this call because knowing what exactly we believe grounds us in our faith and how we communicate it to others.  Ms. Houser also shares how she would defend parts of the Bible if she were posed a question; for example, she illustrates that if she were to defend the resurrection she would use the Minimal Facts Approach and goes on to describe this approach.  I thought that her example was a good illustration of how we should respond to questions about our faith.

Overall, I thought that this book was interesting and made some great points about questions and responses about our faith.  I think this book is a helpful read not just in defending faith but also in communicating your faith in a conversational way that is informative and neutral.  If you are interested in reading a different approach to speaking about your faith, I would recommend this book.

Happy Reading!
