Merry and Bright by Debbie Macomber is about Mery who works for Jayson Bright, a man who is not so jovial about the holidays.  Merry’s mother and brother decide they are going to surprise Merry by signing her up for an online dating site.  This surprise sends Merry on an adventurous search for romance where she learns not to judge a book by its cover.

Book Review: The Crooked Christmas Tree

The Crooked Christmas Tree

Author:  Damian Chandler
Publisher:  Faith Words
Pages:  144
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Religion/Holidays/Christian

The Crooked Christmas Tree is the true life story told from a father’s perspective.  The story starts with the way many households start the holiday season, the picking of the family Christmas tree.  Mr. Chandler tells the story of how his children picked a crooked Christmas tree.  However, as Mr. Chandler and the reader will discover this is no ordinary crooked tree.
Mr. Chandler is set on a road of introspective discovery, set by a tree he didn’t want to begin with.  He writes about the lessons he learned through this tree; lessons of rejection, the Lord’s saving Grace, and how God loved us so much He sent His only son to earth to save us.  At Christmas, while the perfect Christmas tree is sought to adorn our homes, God sent His perfect son to save our crooked selves.

I really enjoyed reading this book.  Mr. Chandler highlights the true meaning of Christmas and how Jesus’ birth is the light that obliterates all our crooked pieces.

I recommend you read this book.  It is heartwarming and these lessons will live in your heart beyond this holiday season.

Book Review: The Paper Bag Christmas

The Paper Bag Christmas

Author:  Kevin Alan Milne
Publisher:  Center Street
Pages:  160
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Fiction

The Paper Bag Christmas tells the story of Molar and Aaron, two young boys whose lives are changed one fateful Christmas.  Molar and Aaron meet a mall Santa Clause that sets the boys on a course of discovery of the true meaning of Christmas, with an intriguing promise of “a gift you never wanted for Christmas.”  The mall Santa Clause is really Dr. Christopher K. Ringle, who recruits the boys to spread holiday cheer to the children being treated at a hospital.

Two such children that Molar and Aaron meet are Mandhu and Katrina.  Mandhu is a bright and funny child who leads life with positivity and curiosity.  Through all that Mandhu faces, you see his courage and heart for others.  Katrina is a child who isn’t so positive and who struggles to connect with others.  These four children unbeknownst to themselves are set on a journey that impacts each other and those around them.

I can honest report that this story made an incredible effect on me.  I laughed and cried over these endearing characters.  Kevin Alan Milne has created a cast of characters that are unforgettable.  I have definitely made this book a permanent part of my library and one story I will read each Christmas.

I would recommend that you read this book this Christmas!  This story will not only touch your heart, it will also highlight the true meaning of the season!

Album Review: Kutless - Alpha/Omega

Kutless:  Alpha/Omega Album

Kutless’s newest album, Alpha/Omega is from start to finish a wonderful album!  From the moment that I started the album, I have not stopped playing it in its entirety.  The album starts with Your Great Name, which is a powerful praise song that I have begun my days to.  Each song on this album is a reminder of whom God is to us and is such a great worship album in this holiday season.

While I love each song on this album immensely, I have found myself playing Shepherd of My Soul over and over.  This particular is such a reminder that God loves us and shepherds us all the days of our lives.  I recommend that you get this album; you will love it!

Book Review: The Space Between Words

The Space Between Words

Author:  Michele Phoenix
Publisher:  Thomas Nelson
Pages:  336
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Fiction

Michele Phoenix writes a riveting and moving story in The Space Between Words.  The book tells the story of Jessica, who is in France with her friends Vonda and Patrick.  Their time together is fun and light-hearted as good friendships can be until one day it is changed forever.

While at a concert event, Jessica and Vonda are victims of a terrorist attack at the concert venue.  This attack forever changes Jessica’s world and sends her on a healing journey that is heartbreaking and healing.  Jessica decides to stay in France after surviving the attack in order to take a trip she and Patrick had promised they had planned on.  On this trip, Patrick leads her to a sewing box and through this sewing box, Jessica is introduced to the Baillard family who were persecuted in the Protestant movement in France.  Jessica embarks on a journey to find out who the Baillard family were and what happened to them.  Along this journey, Jessica meets Mona and Grant, a brother and sister who rent to Jessica the property she stays on while on the trip and Jessica also meets little Connor, Mona’s son.

This book was a difficult one to read.  There were several times I found myself having to pause from the emotions it emitted from me.  Michele Phoenix writes with depth and compassion.  Jessica’s journey is heart-wrenching.  Mona, Grant, and Connor are such wonderful characters; representing strength, compassion, and faith.  Each member of the Baillard family were models of strength and love in the midst of adversity and their strong faith in God resonated throughout their own journey.
Overall, this book is one that I won’t soon forget.  Michele Phoenix tells a story that impacts you to the core however resonates with hope, strength, and shows how God is faithful to us in most difficult times in our lives.

Book Review: A Haven on Orchard Lane

A Haven on Orchard Lane

Author:  Lawana Blackwell
Publisher:  Bethany House
Pages:  407
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Fiction

A Haven on Orchard Lane is a charming story surrounding the relationship of Rosalind Kent and Charlotte Ward, daughter and mother.  Charlotte Ward is a renowned theatre actress that has been in a loveless and abusive marriage for many years.  Charlotte’s daughter, Rosalind had been sent to live with her aunt many years before when Rosalind was a child.  The years of separation embittered Rosalind towards her mother.  One day, Charlotte, whom for many years had been out of the public eye since her marriage to Lord Fosberry is presented an opportunity to escape the reclusive life she had been living and return to the theatre stage.  During Charlotte’s debut onstage, a cruel incident occurs which reunites mother and daughter.

The journey that Rosaline and Charlotte take is filled with forgiveness, understanding, and love.  Charlotte’s faith sustains her and through this faith shines the love and concern she has not only for her daughter but others as well.  I loved Charlotte’s character from the beginning along with most of the individuals she meets in Port Stilwell.  The themes of forgiveness, love, faith, and friendship are featured in this wonderful book.  Ms. Blackwell writes greatly detailed characters that are so endearing and paints a most picturesque town.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading fiction set within small town life.

Book Review: What I Gain Through His Pain

What I Gain Through His Pain

Author:  Nicole Benoit-Roy
Publisher:  Createspace Independent Publishing
Pages:  126
Audience:  Women
Genre:  Ministry

Nicole Benoit-Roy writes of her walk with God.  Mrs. Benoit-Roy is very open, writing of her childhood and her difficult relationships with her family.  Mrs. Benoit-Roy writes of her journey to her discovery of God and details the road that she walked with Him in various circumstances in her life.

Mrs. Benoit-Roy writes with honesty; her honesty about her thoughts which she acknowledges were not thoughts that the Lord would have approved at all times.  This type of transparency is indicative of a true walk with God where we are not perfect, but learning to be like Jesus.  Central topics that Mrs. Benoit-Roy writes about are forgiveness, persecution, and loss.  Mrs. Benoit-Roy’s experiences are relatable.  Her faith amidst struggles serves as a great example of how we strive each day to be more like Jesus.

Mrs. Benoit-Roy’s book is honest and depicts a woman of faith.  I recommend this book; you may get some encouragement in your own journey with God.

Bible Study Review: Woman 2 Woman: The Naomi and Ruth Experience

Woman 2 Woman:  The Naomi and Ruth Experience

Author:  Deborah G. Ross
Publisher:  Xulon Elite
Pages:  168
Audience:  Women
Genre:  Bible Study

I was given the opportunity by the author, Deborah G. Ross to review this Bible study and I am so happy I had the chance to do so.  This Bible study is based on the Book of Ruth in the Bible.  This Bible study centers on the relationships; the relationship between Naomi and Ruth and their relationship and faith to God.

This Bible study is so rich in taking the themes found within the Book of Ruth.  Deborah Ross and her contributors take you through a series of themes, New Beginnings, Choosing Life, The Home, and Leaning on God.  Through these series there are topics such as Forgiveness, Marriage, and Godly Character are explored using the example of these two faithful women.  The Bible study has poignant and soul-searching questions to the reader/group of the Bible study that really allow for exploration of Scripture, God’s promises, and how we can reflect on our lives within these contexts.

I can honestly say I learned so much from this Bible study.  It was well-written and paced very well.  Deborah Ross and her contributors are gifted Bible teachers and I would recommend their Bible studies.

Matthew West: All In Album Review

Matthew West:  All In

From the start of Matthew West’s album, All In, you are taken on a wonderful ride of worship songs.  The title son, All In is a wonderful resounding of our devotion to God.

Matthew West sings of a God who is merciful, and loving (a wonderful reminder to have if you ask me.)  Songs such as All In and Amen will also get you bopping around with the truth of the lyrics.  Becoming Me is a touching song featuring Matthew West’s daughter; the song is a tribute to how a parent shapes the life of their child (a song I also attributed to how God shapes us as His children).  There is also a cute short impromptu conversation at the end of the album with Mr. West and his children; it will make you smile.

Thank you Mr. West for this album!  It has been a true gift to listen to!

I recommend this album for your worship library!  It is upbeat, beautifully written and sung.  This album embodies hope and the truth of God’s love for us.

Author:  Joyce Meyer

The moment I opened this Amplified version of the Bible featuring commentary and introductions from Joyce Meyer, I loved it.  Joyce Meyer has put much thought into how to address the use of Scriptures into the battles we face in our minds.  Joyce Meyer uses language that is clear and comprehensible and addresses the topics she discusses in her book, Battlefield of the Mind.  There are featured sections such as A Prayer to Renew Your Mind and Keys to a Victorious Life interspersed between each book that make understanding the points easier.

Book Review: Redeeming Cade

Redeeming Cade

Author:  Susan Crawford
Publisher:  Serenade Books
Pages:  185
Audience:  Women
Genre:  Fiction/Christian Romance

Redeeming Cade by Susan Crawford is a beautifully told story about Cade McGuire, a man with a checkered past who turns his life around with the help of the Lord and is the assistant director of a community mission that helps people who are homeless.  Cade is very connected to the mission and the community they serve.  However, one day Cade finds out that the mission is being threatened by a politician set on closing it down in order to build a entertainment district in the community.

The politician is Darby Phillips, a woman who has the best of intentions in her campaign to become City Council member.  From the beginning, Cade and Darby are at odds due to the closing of the mission and their relationship takes them both on a God-ordained journey neither expected.

I enjoyed reading the story of these two characters.  Susan Crawford developed relatable characters.  Cade struggles with the shame of his past and Darby is trying to figure out her purpose.  God intervened in both their lives and illustrated to them that He will guide them through their struggles.  I think that this story is a wonderful reminder of how God meets us in the middle of our struggles and through His guidance and love leads us to freedom in Him.

Book Review: Are My Kids On Track?

Are My Kids On Track?
The 12 Emotional, Social, and Spiritual Milestones Your Child Needs to Reach

Author:  Sissy Goff, David Thomas, & Melissa Trevathan
Publisher:  Bethany House
Pages:  294
Audience:  Parents
Genre:  Christian Living/Parenting

Are My Kids on Track? asks the question that are on many parents’ minds.  Sissy Goff, David Thomas, and Melissa Trevathan, all licensed therapists, take us through three important milestones:  emotional, social, and spiritual that will help parents determine if their children are on track.  Each milestone is explained through its stumbling blocks and its building blocks.  The stumbling and building blocks are identified and explained in detail for both boys and girls.  Some of the topics within each milestone discuss emotional vocabulary, perspective, empathy, reciprocity, identity, mercy, and ownership.  The authors even include a section at the end of each chapter that gives parents pracitical ideas on how to build on the topic discussed in the chapter.

I really think this book is a great tool for parents.  It discusses key areas in children’s
development that are very pertinent.  I think the authors’ give wonderful examples through their work with children and families.  Scripture verses were wonderful examples of how others in the Bible struggled similarly and give hope and encouragement.

The African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” is true and I consider the advice from these fellow villagers (Sissy Goff, David Thomas, & Melissa Trevathan) to be very helpful.

Book Review: The Second Half

The Second Half

Author:  Lauraine Snelling
Publisher:  FaithWords
Pages:  368
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Fiction

The Second Half by Lauraine Snelling is about Ken and Mona Sorenson and their family.  Ken Sorenson is about to retire from his job at Stone University and spend his free time fishing and traveling with his wife, Mona.  Mona has her own business and works from home.  She has suffered from depression for many years and is in constant fear it will come back and take over her life as it had before.

Ken and Mona have faced many challenges together with the strength of their faith.  Another struggle looms on the horizon with the military deportation of their son, Steig, who is the full-time caregiver of two children, Mellie and Jake.  Ken and Mona are faced with raising their two grandchildren while their son serves his country.  With the help of their daughter, Marit, the family faces the challenges ahead with strength and a strong faith.

I truly love this story.  These characters are so real and the struggles that deal with are written with such realism.  I liked the fact that Ms. Snelling addressed the topic of depression in Mona.  Mona’s fear that the depression could debilitate her is such a realistic portrayal on how depression effects individual lives; I thought Mona was a wonderful example of this particular struggle and how it can affect a family.  Each of these characters will touch your heart as they navigate their own feelings and doubts.  This story reflects how putting faith in the Lord can give you strength and that He is with us in all of our circumstances.

Mandisa
Out of the Dark, Deluxe Edition Album

Mandisa’s new album, Out of the Dark, is uplifting and inspirational!  Every song on this album has a powerful message and will touch your heart.  Mandisa’s lyrics and beautiful voice speaks the pain and depression she was experiencing during a difficult time in her life.  The words in these lyrics also speak hope and of the love of Jesus.  Mandisa’s voice is full of passion, faith, and honesty.

I loved every single one of these songs on this album!  The song, The One He Speaks Through is one of my most favorite songs on this album for its uplifting message and truth of how we can bring God’s love to one another through our words and actions.  Mandisa is one such person, who has been used by God to speak of His love, strength, and truth through her powerful songs.

Unashamed:  Drop the Baggage, Pick Up Your Freedom, Fulfill Your Destiny

Author:  Christine Caine
Publisher:  Zondervan
Pages:  224
Audience:  Women
Genre:  Christian Life/Spiritual Growth

Shame.  It is a powerful and all-encompassing feeling that can hold us captive and impact our lives so completely and negatively.  Shame is the topic of Christine Caine’s newest book.

Christine Caine discusses very candidly about her experiences with shame and how it affected her life.  She also discusses how her decision to follow God changed these shame messages.  Christine Caine details how God delivered her from the feeling of shame and gave her a new, God-given vision for her life.  Mrs. Caine details how we can overcome these shameful messages in our lives, by depicting the ways in which God worked in her.

Christine Caine writes about how shame keeps us from trusting God and others, and she reveals the truth, God did not create us to live a life of slavery.  God is light, let Him in because He will love you and chase that darkness of shame away.

The message in this book will positively impact your life.  Christine Caine is real and relatable.  This book made a wonderfully positive impact on my life and I feel it would make one for everyone who reads it.

Book Review: The Broken Way

The Broken Way:  a daring path into the abundant life

Author:  Ann Voskamp
Publisher:  Zondervan
Pages:  224
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Spiritual Growth

Ann Voskamp’s book, The Broken Way, asks a pivotal question:  “How do we live with our one broken heart?”  Have you ever asked yourself that very same question?  I know I have.  Ann has so much to say in response to this valid question.

Ann points out that Jesus was willing to be broken for us.  She also states that Jesus is enough and once we embrace this fact, we will embrace out brokenness.  Ann also states that our brokenness serves a purpose in serving others; when we are broken we can open ourselves up to others who are also broken, which gives way to trusting others and consequentially each other with our brokenness.

I recommend this book to everyone.  Ann Voskamp delivers so much in this book.  This message is powerful and one that will bring light into your broken places.  Ann’s words are down to earth and spoken from the heart.

Book Review: Twelve Days of Christmas

Twelve Days of Christmas

Author:  Debbie Macomber
Publisher:  Random House
Pages:  280
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Fiction

Julia Padden is a likable and bubbly character who is an aspiring writer.  Cain Maddox is a surly, unkind individual who one day steals Julia’s newspaper, which causes a slew of change in his life.  The change:  Julia has an idea to kill her neighbor, Cain Maddox, with kindness in the 12 days leading up to Christmas.  Julia sets up a blog and proceeds to write about her new experiment.  Unbeknownst to Julia, this experiment will have long-lasting effects on her life as well.

I found this book very entertaining.  The characters are well described and can be quite lovable.  I really didn’t like Cain much in the beginning but you get to understand where he’s coming from as the book progresses.

Debbie Macomber is a wonderful writer with characters that jump off the page.  I would recommend this book as a fun and entertaining read!

Laura Story: Open Hands Album Review

Laura Story
Open Hands Album

Laura Story has done it again; she has released a wonderful album!

Laura Story’s album Open Hands is a worship album filled with beautiful music and lyrics.  The songs on this album are so worshipful, giving worship to the Lord, giving comfort when we are hurting, and are reminders that God is with us always.  Laura’s voice is beautiful and the lyrics are so heartfelt and meaningful.

I absolutely love this album and cannot stop playing it!  The song Open Hands is a powerful song about giving all we have to God.  The song You Came Running is a great reminder that when we fell at our lowest, God will see us through.

I definitely recommend this album to anyone’s worship music library.  You will love it!

Book Review: A Baxter Family Christmas

A Baxter Family Christmas

Author:  Karen Kingsbury
Publisher:  Howard Books
Pages:  272
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Fiction

This is the first Karen Kingsbury book I have read and in my opinion Ms. Kingsbury is a wonderful storyteller!

Karen Kingsbury’s latest book is a continuation of the Baxter family story.  The Baxter family suffered a terrible loss of Erin Baxter Hogan, her husband, and three of their four children in a car accident two years ago.  Two years later, John Baxter, the patriarch of the family reaches out to the woman who received his daughter’s heart, Kendra Bryant, and invites her to Christmas dinner with his family.  John’s invite is met with mixed emotions within the Baxter family.  This invite causes division and conflicted feelings, with some of the family against meeting Kendra Bryant.  In another storyline, Maddie Baxter West, has a special prayer request and meaning this Christmas.

These characters are very relatable and their stories will touch your heart.  Karen Kingsbury brings their story to life so vividly.  This story tells of loss, love, and forgiveness.  I was sad that I reached the end of the book because I wanted to spend more time with this family.  I hope that Ms. Kingsbury writes more about this family in the future.

Book Review: When We Last Spoke

When We Last Spoke

Author:  Marci Henna
Publisher:  CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Pages:  242
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Fiction

Take a trip to Fireside, Texas and you will want to stay there for more than ‘just a spell.’  The author, Marci Henna, tells the story of Juliet and Evangeline Cranbourne, two children being raised by their grandparents Walt and Ruby Cranbourne.  Walt and Ruby raise the girls with love and teach the girls the true meaning of family.  Throughout the trials they face in childhood, Juliet and Evangeline learn about family, strength, friendships, about forgiveness and healing.

Set in the late 1960’s, Marci Henna paints a picture of a small southern town equipped with a unique cast of characters.  Each character is well-developed and you won’t be able not to find each character endearing.  Personally, I fell in love with Fireside, Texas and its cast of characters.  I do hope in the future, Ms. Henna will deliver us more adventures of these characters.

I encourage you to pick up this book and take a trip to Fireside, Texas, where you will laugh, cry, and be entertained.

And now there are a couple of giveaways happening this month for When We Last Spoke!  From February 20 – 24th, 2017, Marci Henna will be doing a giveaway on Amazon for a Kindle version of When We Last Spoke!

Joyful:  A Truthful Guide to Finding Peace and Living a Fulfilling Life

Author:  Toks Adebiyi

Joyful:  A Truthful Guide to Finding Peace and Living a Fulfilling Life is in fact told in sincerity and truth.  Toks Adebiyi, the author, writes of his experiences growing up and his observances around him.  He is also very candid about his evolution from a young man wanting to be successful to the journey he is on today, and all of the lessons he learned along the way.

Mr. Adebiyi’s realization of not feeling fulfilled and his determination to not only discover his fulfillment but also his quest to aid others in discovering their own fulfilling callings.
I truly enjoyed Mr. Adebiyi’s story because it was so honest and sincere.  We all have found ourselves at a crossroads and need to journey forth in discovering what God has for us.

This book is an enjoyable book of one individual’s inspirational and faithful journey.  If you’re in need of some inspiration give this book a read.

Intercessory Prayer

Intercessory Prayer
How God Can Use Your Prayers To Move Heaven and Earth

Author:  Dutch Sheets
Publisher:  Bethany House
Pages:  316
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Prayer

Dutch Sheets has written a book that introduces and explains what intercessory prayer does and the role we play in prayer.  While this book may look intimidating, trust me, it is not.  Mr. Sheets writes with clarity and humor; he writes as if he is having a conversation with you.

Mr. Sheets explains the meaning and power of prayer.  He also is very honest about prayer and that when we pray the answer may not always be answered in the way that we want.  He also addresses the fact that the answer may not be immediate.  I really appreciated these statements because it signified the realness of his writing and true purpose of him imparting these truths of prayer and its meaning to the reader.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about prayer.  This book is filled with a lot of in-depth information and will deepen and enrich your prayer life.

Happy Reading!
