Book Review: Give Them Jesus

Give Them Jesus
Raising our Children on the Core Truths of the Christian Faith

Author:  Dillon T. Thornton, PhD
Publisher:  FaithWords
Pages:  218
Audience:  Adults/Parents
Genre:  Christian Living/Parenting

Give Them Jesus by Dillon T. Thornton, PhD focuses on how to teach children on the truths of the Christian faith.  It is difficult for parents to communicate the Christian values and faith of the Bible to a child in a way that they would understand.  Dr. Thornton, however, has a solution that would aid parents bring faith to their children in a way that would be understood.  Dr. Thornton suggests beginning this journey with the Apostle’s Creed.  The Apostle’s Creed is an organized way to teach about the values and teachings of the Christian faith.  Dr. Thornton proceeds to guide parents in an explanation of each part of the Creed and suggests ways in which these parts can be explained to a child.  He includes a family worship guide at the end of every chapter to serve as a tool for parents.

I found that Dr. Thornton’s idea of teaching the Apostle’s Creed to children to be a wonderful idea that helps children to understand the Christian faith and helps to grow their own faith.  Dr. Thornton is very real with his explanations and even his own experiences with his children.  This book would be helpful to every parent that needs a starter to guiding their children in the Christian faith.

Book Review: Alaskan Holiday

Alaskan Holiday

Author:  Debbie Macomber
Publisher:  Ballantine Books
Pages:  256
Audience:  Adults
Genre:  Fiction

Alaskan Holiday is the story of Palmer and Jose, a couple who met in Ponder, Alaska.  Josie is a chef at the local lodge that is about to close for the winter season.  Josie is set to return to Seattle, Washington where she is from.  Palmer, an Alaskan native, is distraught over losing Josie, the love of his life, and proposes to her.  Unfortunately, the proposal doesn’t have the desired outcome Palmer wishes, which sets both Palmer and Josie on a journey to what they both want.

Upon finishing this book, I was disappointed.  The story was very predictable, and the main characters weren’t as likeable as other characters I have loved and treasured in other Debbie Macomber novels.  I did enjoy Debbie Macomber’s depiction of the Alaskan lifestyle with its simplicity, complexities, and the richness of friendships in tight-knight community.

I look forward to reading other works by Debbie Macomber.  Unfortunately, Alaskan Holiday isn’t a book I would pick up again.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: The Wish

The Wish

Author:  Beverly Lewis
Publisher:  Bethany House
Pages:  326
Audience:  Women
Genre:  Contemporary Fiction

Beverly Lewis’s, The Wish, is a wonderful story about faith, friendship, and family.  Leona Speicher and Gloria Gingerich are the best of friends. However, Gloria’s family moves away due to a conflict her father has with the Order.  Time passes, however, both girls still think of their friendship with fondness and Gloria reaches out to Leona.  Their reunion is bittersweet and fraught with conflict.  Beverly Lewis has created characters that are very real and you will find yourself becoming invested in their friendship and journey of faith.

This is a heartwarming story of how the bonds of friendship can give us strength and that faith is powerful.  This story reminded me that God works everything for our good and hears our prayers.  This story is also a reminder of the blessing of true friendship and love of family and fellowship.  God is always listening and with you every step of the journey you are on.

Happy Reading!
